Unmissable!!
Everyone knows that every country is a small box containing legends and traditions that are lost far away in time. A distant, remote past full of testimonies that have traced the destiny of a territory.

In Marina di Camerota, a seaside village in the Cilento National Park, lies a history as old as the hills. With a suggestive walk between the blue of the sea and the green of the Mediterranean maquis, following the road that from Palinuro runs along the Cilento's coast, you reach the Pearl of Cilento.

It is easy to understand why this place has attracted and continues to attract thousands of tourists: wild nature, Mediterranean scents, jagged coastlines, coves with crystal clear waters, islets, watchtowers, caves of land and sea, rich in the mysterious charm that has its roots in prehistoric time.

The Caves of Marina di Camerota have attracted scientific interest and assumed international importance thanks to the historical finds brought to light by experts. The research has made it possible to reconstruct the changes that occurred along the coast and the activities of prehistoric man. The Neanderthal man was the first inhabitant of this magnificent territory.

From the historical centre of Marina di Camerota, which preserves intact the appearance of a fishing village, through alleys that pass under suggestive vaults and arches, you can reach the beaches, where you find out the first Palaeolithic caves. Here, we are at the home of the Neanderthal man.

Grotta della Cala
The first cave to visit, a few meters from the sea, is the Grotta della Cala. It consists of a cave front and a cave back, connected by a bottleneck.
The shape of this cave resembles an hourglass. Pebbles and bone weapons testify the presence of our Neanderthal ancestors who inhabited the cave in the Middle Paleolithic. Then the cave bequeathed to Homo Sapiens, that used the cave in a more systematic way. People lived off hunting at that time; for this reason various stone tools have been found, such as scrapers and back tips, faunal remains, sea shells used as ornaments, bone artefacts and fireplaces. The traces found on the site allow us to mentally reconstruct lifestyles of 20,000 and 40,000 years ago.

Grotta e Riparo del Poggio
On a spur of calcareous nature, these caves originally formed a single cave.  The smaller cavity, corresponding to the Cave, served as drainage for a huge cave. Neanderthal man found shelter inside it. In the Pleistocene times, however, the action of the waters led to a collapse and determined today's form.
Inhabited from the Lower Palaeolithic until the Bronze Age, the soil of these places has preserved remains of deer and roe deer, brown bear, rhinoceros, lion, jackal and elephant. All evidence of the intense hunting activity of man. From the more recent layers come artefacts such as tips, blades and scrapers, examples of how, over time, Neanderthal man has improved the ability to chip stone.

Grotta della Serratura
The journey in this remote time continues. At the end, on the beach of Lentiscelle, there is a cavity whose name is linked to the characteristic shape of a door lock. Deep enough, the cave was inhabited during the Upper Palaeolithic and Neolithic. Holes caused by small molluscs, lithodomes, and furrows left by seawater support the thesis that the Grotta della Serratura has been, over the millennia, submerged by water. Guardian of remains of fauna, the cave bears signs of various climatic changes, such as the silting up of the coast with the presence of ponds, then repopulated by the sea in the Mesolithic period.

Porto Infreschi Caves
The Porto degli Infreschi, a marine jewel of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, is a magnificent example of a natural harbour. Its bays, high rocky cliffs and sea caves of this protected area can be easily reached by boat trips. For the more adventurous and above all nature and trekking lovers, there is a path that silently climbs up the coast and slowly descends to the beach.

Underground springs make the water in the bay particularly cold and not very salty. High up on the coast, in control of the natural harbour, with a glorious past as a watchtower against raids from the sea, are the remains of the tower of Frontone or Infreschi and the chapel of S. Lazzaro. Below, where the earth meets the waters, there are the caves; the only ones reachable by sea: the cave of the Infreschi and the Noglio.

The Noglio cave, like an ancient villa with sea view, is not reachable from the mainland. You enter through a single entrance, which looks like a vertical cut on the sheer wall into the blue waters of the sea. The eye of tourists on holiday in Palinuro is always impressed by the appearance of the cave, which resembles a skull or a monstrous being. The old fishermen of these waters tell strange legends about the unusual shape of the cave.
Even if today it remains a difficult place to reach, the past enclosed inside the cave has revealed to archaeologists that man has inhabited this natural cavity in different periods of prehistory.

At a height of 17 metres, on a platform, where the sea cannot perform its erosive action, traces of human presence have been preserved. The artificial floor, made of layers of different materials, dates back to the Bronze Age. Unaware of any construction technique, driven only by the instinct of survival, the person who inhabited the cave placed a level of clay on a pavement made up of stones and pebbles, in turn laid on top of hot coals that overheated hardened the clay. Two fireplaces have been identified on either side of this primitive but particular floor.

Those who choose Cilento for holidays can't miss these places where history is touched. The visit to the caves of Marina di Camerota is one of the experience for everyone, instructive for adults, fascinating and adventurous for children.  A face to face with prehistory. The entire display, with mannequins reproducing cavemen in their clothing and appearance, has been designed by experts from the University of Siena, in synergy with the Superintendence of Monuments and the management of the Virtual Museum of the Palaeolithic of Camerota.

In the afternoon, when the sun is on its way to the other side of the world, it is the ideal time to visit the caves. On the promenade of Marina di Camerota, near the marina area, the time travel starts. More than a trip to the center of the earth, it is a raid, a leap in time that allows you to understand the historical beauties enclosed in this handkerchief of land where Marina di Camerota is the place from which to start discovering the caves of the coast.
One of the most charming villages on the Cilento coast, with the colourful houses of the fishermen who can not live anywhere. Their home is where the sea is. Marina di Camerota is one of the favorite destinations of Cilento where in addition to the sea also the land offers unique shows. Its origins are rooted in prehistory so much so that even cavemen have inhabited this territory. The many caves and wards brought to light are the testimony that we are at the home of the Neanderthal man.

Verscholen Paradijs
Beiden spreken goed Engels.

Villamirella - A Jewel In Cilento Region
“We booked Villamirella at the last minute via booking.com and on a recommendation of a fellow traveller to visit this area - we were so lucky to have chosen such a lovely place to stay. Carmelo and his wife are wonderful hosts. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We stayed in a hotel room which had its own outdoor terrace. If we return (which we hope to) and a for a longer stay, we would book one of their self-catering apartments - there is a great supermarket right next door and amazing local restaurants close by.”
